Closer to the code

Recently, I was team lead for a medical innovation project. The goal was to digitalize the referrals for blood sampling of plasma lithium concentration. The existing procedure was such that a nurse at our clinic sent paper referrals; I wanted to send referrals as push notifications to patients' phones.

I received a grant and worked on the project for some time. However, I was not able to obtain clearance to develop the software directly, but had to "build" PowerPoint blueprints and send to colleagues, who would build. Errors would creep in as information was misinterpreted. It was like the telephone game. Correcting a typo could take up to a week of emailing back and forth.

For my next project, I must be closer to the code.
